One Afternoon in Memphis
by
Jerry O'Bannion
One afternoon in Memphis
towards the end of July
When the air was so thick you had to chew it
in order to breathe.
And the LCD thermometer embedded
In the SUV's rearview mirror registered
107 ambition melting degrees.
I stood with you on Union avenue
Under the guitar at Sun records
And we shared a grape crush;
Which just for a moment tasted like
All of the snows of yesterday
Rolled into a champagne punch.
But the moment fizzled in the heat
And we were left with just our memories,
A non-returnable bottle,
And two tickets for the Graceland Tour.
